  • The Working Waterfront had a great column last week about how lobstermen, fishermen and others who work with seafood are creating innovative ways to add value to their catch, including new branding initiatives and community supported fisheries.
  • Are you a fan of the TV show “The Deadliest Catch”? Check out this Wall Street Journal op-ed by cast member Scott Campbell, Jr.. Campbell explains how catch shares have made Bering Sea crab fishing “less deadly” by taking fishermen out of a race to catch all the crab before the season closes and allowing them to instead fish only during safe weather conditions. He also notes that catch shares allow fishermen to be more cautious about not catching juvenile crabs so that they remain in the water to grow and reproduce.
  • Two big stories about the New England groundfishery came out this week: over one hundred fishermen asked politicians to stop trying to dismantle the sector system and instead focus on ways to improve it (TalkingFish.org has already blogged about that letter here); and Governor Patrick sent a request to the federal government seeking millions of dollars in disaster assistance funding for Massachusetts fishing communities.
